TILES
The centerpiece of Ribadouro Loulé is an impressive tile panel, conceived and created by Bernadete Martins, a talented local artist. Her inspiration was the sea and evidently seafood, as Ribadouro has been the House of Seafood since 1947.
Bernadette Martins was born in France in 1971 and lives and works in Loulé. She graduated in design at the Institute of Art and Design IADE in Lisbon, and then took a course in tiles and ceramics in Loulé. In 2007 she opened her own tile and ceramics workshop. In 2013 she started teaching ceramics at IEFP in Faro. Since 2018 she is incubated in the Loulé Creative project as a resident artist in the new atelier “Oficina do Barro” (an old pottery depot restored with the purpose of giving a new life to ceramics). There she creates her work inspired by the organic forms of the sea and the earth, where details come to life in a subtle delicacy of shapes and textures, and where fragility gains strength!
“My inspiration is the sea; the marine elements are part of my ceramics pieces and so making the panel for Ribadouro Loulé was something very natural and gratifying.”
